What Modifies What and to What Extent?

[수식관계의 오해]:1)역자는 수식관계를 오해하고 있습니다. which 이하의 관계대명사가 이끄는 형용사절이 수식하는 선행사 피수식어는 바로 앞의 apartment가 아닙니다. 2)그 단서는 the telephone closet의 속성과 keep for himself라는 동사구의 함의 때문입니다. 그런 것이 아니라도 이른바 “비제한적 용법”에서 관계대명사가 이끄는 형용사절이 수식하는 피수식어가 바로 앞에 있는 명사라고 바로 판단해서는 안되고 화자가 의미하는 바에 의하여 결정되는 경우가 많습니다.


[the victim of murder and perhaps worse]:1)역자의 수식관계의 오해는 한 군데에서만 일어난 것이 아닙니다. 이 부분에서도 역자는 오해하고 있습니다. 2)이 부분은 그 앞 부분의 수식관계가 아니라 부연설명 (elaboration)을 하고 있는데 말입니다. 3)따라서, 이 부분은 “피살자도 문제지만 그 보다 더 나쁜 문제도 있었다”라고 번역해야 합니다. 물론, “더 나쁜 것”은 리버포드 양이 당한 참변의 내용이 아니고 그 이하에 잇따라 나오는 진술 내용인 것입니다. 즉, perhaps worse=>A maid had found her의 관계입니다.

[comments]::1)The translator does not know what the author is talking about, that is, what the author intends to say to his readers. In other words, the translator does not know what he himself is now talking about. In short, he is kept in the dark and immersed in his own monologue.


2)What modifies which and to what extent? It might not be an easy job to know that and use it with fluency. But the so-called translator should get himself or herself trained in the modifications and their peripheral issues.


3)The translator of the recently translated novel The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld has got the above paragraph wrong by his complete misinterpretation of the modification at issue. The point is that the adjective clause led by the relative pronoun which does not modify the immediately preceding noun apartment but does modify the noun closet as you see in the following diagrams:the=>closet; telephone=>closet;closet<=of apartment;the=>apartment;penthouse=>apartment;closet<={{which Mr. Banwell had kept for himself}}


4)The translator has got it wrong. Utterly wrong in that he has misconstrued the expression at issue to mean to the effect that "he had kept the penthouse apartment for himself." The mistranslation has been caused by the translator's ignorance of the modification relationships. In short, "he had kept the telephone closet for himself."


5)The translator has committed another error. The phrase {{the victim of murder and perhaps worse}} should not have been interpreted in the context of modifying the previous expression but should have been interpreted in the context of elaboration. He should have known the phrase {{perhaps worse}} is related to the following sentence : {{A maid had found her.}}
