[전문이 오역]:전문이 오역입니다. 뭐 그리 길지도 않은 한 문단을 통째로 오역하는 일도 그리 “쉽지 않은” 일입니다. 정말이지 “어떻게 이 정도까지”라고 생각할 정도입니다.


[get serious about endeavors]:역자는 “신중히 그들의 노력을 펼쳐가기로” 운운하고 있으나 틀렸습니다. “본격적으로 일을 하다”의 의미입니다.


[inspire]:역자는 “고무된” 운운하고 있으나 틀렸습니다. “영감을 얻다”가 바른 번역입니다. “고무되다”의 의미를 가지려면 “ ”로 해야 합니다.


[self-effacing double entendre]:1)'double entendre'만 동음이의어라고만 번역하고 ‘self-effacing’은 번역되지도 않았습니다. ‘self-effacing'은 “체면을 깎아내리는” “자기를 비하하는” “스스로를 낮추는” “스스로 못난체하는” 정도의 의미입니다.


[double entendre]:1)동음이의어라기 보다는 “이중 의미를 풍기는 말” 정도의 뜻입니다. 동음이의어는 homograph, 동철이의어는 homonym입니다. 사전 상에 그렇게 등재되어 있는 경우를 말하는 것입니다. 2)여기서 double entendre란 예컨대 어느 남자가 상대 여성에게 “Are you free?"라고 묻는 경우 ”시간이 있느냐?“의 의미와 ”나하고 사귈 수가 있느냐?“의 의미도 은근히 풍기는데 이런 경우의 free 또는 ”Are you free?"가 바로 ‘더블 앙탕드르“인 것입니다. 사전 상의 등재와는 관계가 적습니다.


[double entendre]:1)역자는 기이하게도 이 패러그래프의 ‘double entendre'를 [걸리버여행기]에 나오는 인종과 패러그래프에서 정의된 “무례하고 세련되지 못하고 투박한 인간”이란 정의와 이중의미라고 파악하고 있으나 어이가 없습니다. 2)영어는 관계이며 관계 속에서 의미를 파악해야 합니다. 그리고 ’관계‘란 필자 또는 독자의 기지의 지식과의 관계가 아니라 “문장 내의 관계”입니다. 3)Yahoo는 따라서 “못난 인간”이라는 자기비하적 의미와 “역순공법” (reverse engineering)의 의미를 가진다는 것입니다.

[comments]::1)I find myself speechless at the scene unfolding before me. How on earth can a man's or a woman's misinterpretation of a specific English prose, a translator's at that, be so complete? The translator is literally kept in the dark about what the original author is talking about and he or she is spitting out blah blah blahs...


2)English is relationships. In other words, the English language, like other languages of the civilized nations, is the language of relationships. So, if you're stuck somewhere, all that you have to do is seek out the relationships between the statements, just like detectives do in their chase of criminals.


3)The translator has got it wrong. Utterly wrong in the he or she has misconstrued the 치며se at issue {{Yang and Filo decided to get serious about their endeavor}}to mean to the effect "Yang and Filo decided to act in a prudent manner." The correct version should have been: "Yang and Filo decided to get down to the business proper."


4)When the author said {{they knew they had a winner}}, he meant to say that they got "a successful thing," in this case "a right name." The translator has got it wrong in that he or she has misconstrued the clause at issue to mean to the effect that "They were overjoyed as if the world were theirs."


5)What is meant by {{the self-effacing double entendre?}}What do you mean by 'self-effacing' to begin with? To be brief, the word 'self-effacing' is synonymous with the word 'modest.' More immediately, the word 'self-deprecating' is closer to the meaning of the word 'self-effacing.'


5)The English language is relationships. Then what does the word 'self-effacing' have to do with what? It has, of course, to do with the word 'Yahoo.' Why? Don't you see the definition of Yahoo in the description "a rude, unsophisticated, uncouth person" To elaborate, the linguistic equation is just like this:self-effacing=>Yahoo=>a rude, unsophisticated, uncouth person.


6)The translator has been mistaken in the notion of the double entendre by enumerating an utterly irrelevant example of Yahoo and "a rude, unsophisticated, uncouth person." He or she must have been scratching an utterly different person's back.


7)The double entendre is not a homograph and not a homonym, either. Homographs and homonyms are entered in the dictionary. But when you mention the double entendre, it is not necessarily entered in the dictionary. The duality of the meaning is determined by the situation. In other words, it takes on the double meaning according to the atmosphere in which the discourse is being set forth. (ex. Are you free?)


8)The word representing the double entendre, in this case, is Yahoo, of course, which means doubly a self-effacing notion of "a rude, unsophisticated, uncouth person" (in short, a humble person) and the notion of reverse engineering denoting "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle" (in short, a self-important one). As a natural result, Yahoo holds a double meaning with two conflicting notions. And you should be aware of the fact that the phrase {{Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle}} is not a formal expression but coined by Yang and Filo themselves.


9)What is the 'reverse engineering' anyway? 10)Can't you see the relationship between {{the reverse engineering}}and {{Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle?}}Don't you see the concept of the reverse engineering is defined in the phrase {{Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle?}} To elaborate, the phrase in question {{Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle}} means the tiered process for the sake of the checkings of the functions and workings of a specific machine or device in the reverse manner, up from the surface down into the deep inside? As a natural result, the word self-effacing is the opposite of the word officious. (modest=>self-important) Oracle in this case figuratively means a key, and principle.
